OX2 is progressing the development of the approved Sunshine State Solar Farm and Battery, featuring a 128MW (AC) solar farm and a 128MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) across 190 hectares. The site is located north of Hencamp Creek Road 4km north of Rollingstone and Balgal Beach and approximately 55km northwest of Townsville, on private land.
The project will connect to QLD’s electricity network via a switching station linked to the existing 132kV transmission line. A new overhead line (approximately 100m in length) will be required on the solar farm property to connect the project to the existing network.
Operations are expected to begin by 2029.
The 2.48ha Battery will store up to 128MW of electricity. This will enable the project to store energy for dispatch into the grid during periods of peak demand which contributes to increased grid stability and security.
EPBC Referral
The Project was referred to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the Department) under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) for confirmation on whether Commonwealth environmental approval is required.
In November 2025, the Department determined that further assessment and approval is not required.
